The Veterans Arts Council is pleased to present the new Veterans Writing Workshop starting June 5, 2024!
The program will be a 12-month plan covering all aspects of writing. The Veterans Writing Workshop aims to assist new or emerging veteran writers in discovering their personal writing goals as well as completing a publishable piece all within a supportive community. Instructional workshops will include genres, idea generation, the art and craft of writing, alongside practical advice in the Business of Writing, the Writer's Life, and Writing and Healing. Further, most months will feature a live feedback group on Zoom where writers can gain constructive feedback on their work while learning how to appropriately give critique in a compassionate way.
The instructional workshop will be held every first Wednesday at 7 PM at VFW POST 1 located at 841 Santa Fe, Denver. Writers who can't make the in-person session will be able to access the class live on Zoom or on YouTube soon thereafter. It is not required to attend all classes but those who participate as a cohort with regular attendance will have the opportunity to receive a certificate of completion. The feedback group will be available only to those who sign up before each session.
The Veterans Writing Workshop is lead by Maggie Cubbler, a former Navy linguist during Operation Iraqi/Enduring Freedom with an MA in Creative Nonfiction Writing from the University of Denver and Enrique Gautier, an OEF-era Navy chief working on his MFA in Creative Writing from Naropa University.
The VAC has a number of authors who have published books, magazine articles, and poetry. The authors share their experiences during the writers workshop. Maggie and Enrique are dedicated to helping eligible veterans, active duty members and their families find their writing voices under the pillars of Healing, Community, and Mentorship.
